Translate street signs with your iPhone camera

Hold your iPhone up to a street sign, train timetable or notice and Snap draws the translation over the original text as you move.

Steps

  1. Open the camera

Open Snap and stay on the Translation tab.

  2. Set the sign language

Choose the language of the sign. Automatic detection needs a connection.

  3. Point at the sign

Hold the phone steady. The translation appears over the sign.

  4. Pause if it moves

For a timetable you are walking past, tap Pause and read it on the frozen view.

Signs are short, so the live view usually reads them in a moment. For a long notice, take a photo instead and translate it from your library.

Questions

What if the sign is in a script Snap cannot read on the phone?
Other scripts than Latin, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Devanagari need an internet connection to be read.
