Translate a menu with your iPhone camera

Snap reads the menu through the camera and draws the translation over the original text while you move the phone. Pause the view when you want to read a dish slowly.

Steps

  1. Open the camera

Open Snap. The Translation tab is the camera.

  2. Choose your languages

Pick the language of the menu and the language you read. For offline use, choose the menu language yourself instead of automatic detection.

  3. Point at the menu

Hold the phone over the menu. The translation appears over the printed text.

  4. Pause to read

Tap Pause to freeze the view and read a dish without keeping the phone steady.

Menus are the most common reason to open a camera translator. Snap works on printed menus, chalkboards and menu boards, and it keeps the translation lined up with the original text so you can still match a dish to its price.

Questions

Does it work without internet?
Text from the camera can be translated without a connection once you download the language pair in the language picker. Automatic language detection needs a connection.
Which scripts can be read on the phone?
Latin, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Devanagari are read on the phone. Other scripts need a connection.
Can I trust it for allergies?
Snap is not a certified translator and translations can contain mistakes. Ask the staff to confirm anything about allergies.
